Who We Are

Metro Dog opened its doors in 2006, becoming the first and only green-certified, behavior-based dog day care and boarding center in the Bay Area. As veteran dog professionals, Metro Dog’s original leadership brought a combined 20 years of industry experience to the design of our center and programs. Metro Dog was an overnight success and has become the gold standard for behavior-based day care and boarding in the East Bay. We have openly shared our program structures within the community and are thrilled to see many competitors adopting fundamental aspects of the programs we pioneered. We continue to innovate and develop new programs to meet the changing needs of our community and market.

Metro Dog is owned by co-founder Diane Livoti and her husband, Todd Perlman. Diane leads Metro Dog’s day care and boarding center. She has been a certified canine behavior consultant through the Marin Humane Society since 2002. She ran a successful dog-walking business prior to founding Metro Dog and brings extensive knowledge of off-leash group behavior and management to Metro Dog. She understands people, too, having been a public school educator and wilderness professional. The consistent theme of Diane’s days for the past two decades has been providing exceptional care for hundreds of the Bay Area’s luckiest dogs when their owners are at work or away.

Todd joined the business in 2010, shortly after their daughter was born. As full-time director of Metro Dog’s in-home dog-walking and pet-sitting service, Todd is often the face of the company for those who don’t use center-based services. Prior to joining the family business, Todd spent nearly 20 years in journalism as a reporter and editor at various newspapers on the East and West coasts. His last posting before joining Metro Dog full time was as bureau chief of the West County edition of the former Contra Costa Times. He also spent time as news editor at the Oakland Tribune.

In 2017, Metro Dog became a fully family-owned and -run business when co-founder Alison Smith left to pursue new interests. Under the co-leadership of Diane and Todd, Metro Dog’s team of dedicated staff has leapt into our second decade in business with a renewed vitality for all things dog. 2017 and 2018 saw the complete overhaul of our outside play yards, to the great delight of the dogs, with more still to come as we redesign several of our indoor spaces. In the coming year you will see a new colors on our building, refreshed website with mobile version, new customer portal, online retail store and an ever-increasing presence on social media sites Instagram and Facebook. We couldn’t be more excited about the future of Metro Dog.

A final note from Todd and Diane: “Metro Dog is a labor of love for us. We couldn’t imagine our lives, or our children’s lives, without you and your dogs. Thank you for entrusting their care to us and the incredible people that make up our staff. Thank you for supporting a locally owned, small business. We see you at school drop-off, at the grocery store, and the coffee shop; we have watched your children – fur-babies and human – grow just as you’ve watched ours. We cannot say ‘thank you’ enough for letting us into your lives and for being a part of ours.”
